Things to do when visiting Port Lincoln and the surrounding areas

About Port Lincoln

Port Lincoln is a small city of about 14500 people, it situated at the bottom tip of the Eyre Peninsula overlooking Boston Bay boasts a large natural harbour.
The first permanent settlers arrived in March 1839 aboard the ships Abeona, Dorset and Porter. It was initially considered for the capital of South Australia because of the large deep sea harbour but because of the lack of fresh water Adelaide was chosen instead.

Port Lincoln is a major commercial center for the Lower Eyre Peninsula; the main industries in Port Lincoln are fishing, a large grain loading facility and tourism.
The majority of Australia’s tuna boats are located in Port Lincoln, the tuna is caught in the Great Australian Bight and then farmed behind Boston Island for export to mainly Japan. Other fisheries are prawn, abalone, mussel and oyster leases in Coffin Bay. Port Lincoln is often referred to a the "Sea Food Capital of Australia".

Around Port Lincoln

Port Lincoln makes an ideal base from where to explore the coast, the hinterland and experience what the Eyre Peninsula offers.

Some of our best destinations are our beautiful National Parks. Both Port Lincoln and Coffin Bay National Parks are within half an hour drive from here and make good day trips; also Whalers Way with it's rugged coastline. On the way to Fishery Bay, stop at Mikkira to have a look at the only koala colony on Eyre Peninsula this is also a great place for a picnic.

Inland from Port Lincoln a visit to Glenn Forrest Animal Park at Greenpatch is a must if travelling with children (feed the animals and the parrots) and a drive to Koppio.
The smithy museum in Koppio is worth a visit and on the way back to Port Lincoln look at the Rose Garden especially beautiful when the roses are blooming.
